i feel that we all do wear masks, and in the words of Jaques, from Shakespeare's 'As you like it', 'all the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players'. i think this is a straightforward way of understanding the concepts of masks. Goffman, (1959) furthers this point with his discussion of the dramaturgical theory.

On this matter I think that we do perform, we just have been taught how to do it when we are very young and therefore we do it automatically

I believe that we do wear masks in everyday society but I believe that we do need to wear them. It only seems logical to me that we have different aspects in personality and it is not someone just being fake but when you wear a certain mask it is your personality.

I agree with ilikethequeen in regards to having many sections of a self that can make up our masks. It is true that some people have less masks than others because of their lifestyle. For example, a mother can have a few masks because she only performs a set amount of roles. This could be compared with a high flying professional who has to perform more masks because of large amounts of people that they would come into contact with.

I was just thinking that this subject is quite apt at this time, with the General Election and the masks we wear in terms of our political beliefs.  Some people do not like talking about who they will be voting for and seem to acquire a mask of "indifference" perhaps if they're embarrassed by their choice of party or simply prefer not to pin their colours to the mast.

just a thought.....
