Be Yourself
« on: September 30, 2011, 12:31:11 PM »

Can anyone recommend any other songs, apart from those by Enrique and The Fugees, which express the sentiment 'be yourself'?

True Colours by Cyndi Lauper talk about how showing your true self makes you beautiful and no matter how tough things may get, you should not jeopardise that.

Jimmy Eat World - In The Middle:

"Hey, you know they're all the same.
You know you're doing better on your own, so don't buy in.
Live right now.
Yeah, just be yourself.
It doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else."

Lady Gaga sugests this in 'Born this way'
e.g. the following lines
‘There’s nothing wrong with loving who you are’
‘Hold your head up and you’ll go far’
‘I’m beautiful in my own way’
‘I was born this way’
and
‘Don’t hide yourself in regret just be yourself and you’re set’

In 'Undiscovered', James Morrison sings the following:
'Im not lost, not lost, just undiscovered
we're never alone were all the same as each other
you see the look thats on my face, you might think that i'm out of place
i'm not lost, no no, just undiscovered'

This relates to identity in a different way as it infers that we are all always changing who we are and trying to discover 'the self'

The first song that came to mind was Foo Fighters- The pretender.

'What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?

In time or so I'm told
I'm just another soul for sale... oh, well
The page is out of print
We are not permanent
We're temporary, temporary
Same old story

...

So who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?'

In my opinion it relates to the module in terms of identity and issues surrounding consumerism.

South Park - You Gotta Do What You Wanna Do

If you ignore the idea that you should do whatever it is you want to do so long as everyone else thinks it's cool, it seems fairly relevant. =D

Zac, 'Je veux'. She sings about what she wants and who she is and that she despises all the consumption and is more happy by just being herself, receiving love and joy, discovering liberty.

The first song that comes to mind, on the subject of ‘being yourself’, is Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’. This song is considered empowering for many; speaking to people who feel ostracized from society and raising personal issues of self-esteem and insecurities. The song sends the message to fight them by not listening to others. This song is also renowned particularly for empowering the LGBT community.

I remember everyday in kindergarten we use to say this poem, I forgot most of it but it went something like this:

"I am special
I am me
There is no one I'd rather be
Than me"

I guess from an early age they were making us aware that we should be comfortable being who we are and it stuck! Pity I can't remember it all :(

Be Yourself by one of the classic rock bands Audioslave is one of the more obvious examples.
Also, It's My Life by Bon Jovi is really positive!
Come As You Are by Nirvana, the title is self-explanatory.

I think particularly a lot of alternative music (such as in rock, for example), has this underlying message of not caring what anyone else thinks, and doing your own thing, staying true to yourself etc.
